Since the outbreak of COVID-19 pandemic, a large number of overseas compatriots, including overseas students, have expressed their concern and support for the motherland in fighting against the epidemic. However, while important phased achievements have been made in China, the pandemic has been spreading in foreign countries at a faster speed. Therefore, domestic Chinese are very worried about the safety of overseas Chinese compatriots.
In order to help overseas Chinese students and compatriots reduce cross-language communication barriers between them and the local medical staff when they seek for diagnosis and counseling of COVID-19, we have officially launched the multilingual micro videos of “A Guide to the Prevention and Control of COVID-19 Epidemic in Foreign Languages—Diagnosis” under the guidance and support of the Ministry of Education and the State Language Commission.
The guide selected over 20 commonly-used sentences, related to symptoms, contact history, medical history and medication history from official documents—Plan for Prevention and Control of the COVID-19, Plan for Diagnosis and Treatment of the COVID-19, and Guidance for Public Prevention on the COVID-19, issued by the National Health Commission. They have been released on the WeChat official account and the official website of ACLR of BLCU in the forms of micro videos and online enquiry systems. The videos are in 40 languages including Aalbanian, Amharic, Arabic, Azerbaijani, Bulgarian, Burmese, Byelorussian, Cambodian, Catalan, Czech, English, Finnish, Filipino, French, German, Greek, Hausa, Hindi, Hungarian, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Kazak, Korean, Kyrgyz, Lao, Malay, Mongolian, Persian, Portuguese, Romanian, Russian, Serbian, Spanish, Swahili, Thai, Turkish, Urdu, Ukrainian, Uzbek, Vietnamese and so on . In this way, we help people in need to communicate more accurately.
